Getting Started with Roblox Studio

What is Roblox Studio? It is the proprietary building tool of Roblox where the player or the user can create their own video game. Roblox Studio provides the player with a comprehensive range of design tools that they can use as per their skill level. Using these tools you can fulfill your dream of easily designing and customizing your game.

What makes the use of Roblox Studio easy is the programming language Lua, which is simple to embed and allows fast execution.

Here is how you can get started with Roblox Studio:

Steps involved in creating a Roblox Game

To reach somewhere, one needs to start from the beginning! The same goes for creating a Roblox game. Start from the basics and reach the level where monetising your game is a possibility. Though making a handful of Robux (Roblox Currency) from the start would be rewarding, it is important to first learn the basics of designing and scripting a game on Roblox Studio and get a firm grasp of the functionalities. All it requires is interest and some patience!

Roblox library

  1. Familiarise yourself with the tools required to design your game. Go to the “View” tab on your toolbar and click on “Explorer”. This has all the tools, i.e. parts and scripts one needs to use to create a game.
    • The Properties Box has all the objects that you can customise as per your requirements. You can decide how your game objects will look and how they will act.
    • The Toolbox has a variety of models, meshes, images, audio and videos. These are made by either Roblox or Roblox Game Community members and shared on the Roblox Studio. You can use these in customising your game.
  2. To begin placing things in your game world, go to the “World” menu and select part. The part is a physical object that moves and interacts with other physical objects. The tools “Scale” and “Rotate” are used to change the size and angles of the parts, respectively. Similarly, you can “Move” and “Duplicate” your parts and further add properties of colour, texture, and transparency to them. These parts are the basic building blocks of your game.

If you want the game player to collide with a part, you can add a “CanCollide” feature; otherwise, the player will run right through it. To remove a part from your Roblox game, just click on it under “Workspace” and hit the “Delete” button.

Customizing Your Game

  1. By writing a script, you can add custom functionality to a certain part or model of your game. To customise your game, go to the “Workspace” tab, hover over the part or model and click on the “+” sign. Then go to “Script” and write a script accordingly; for example, if you want your part to throw obstacles at the player, write a script to do so.

Publishing and Sharing Your Game

When you have completed designing your game, you can publish it on the Roblox platform for others to play. Simply click on the “Publish” button, which will take you to a new menu. In this menu, click on “Create New Game” and enter the name of your game along with a short description, genre, and the devices that one can play on.

Additionally, in the top toolbar go to “Game Settings” and click on “Permissions” to set who can play your game. You can set the play settings of your Roblox game to friends, public or private.

Monetising Your Game

Most games on Roblox are free to play. But if you are looking at monetising your game, you can set a fee that players would be required to pay to play your game; for this, Roblox uses the currency Robux that users can purchase on the platform. These Robux are used to play games, pay for subscriptions within the games, purchase passes, and provide in-experience items and virtual items for special game experiences.

Many skilled Roblox game developers are looking to earn from the platform, charging between 25 and 1,000 Robux for their games, depending on the skill level of the game. Developers also earn extra Robux to build an engaging game. The engagement-based payout is calculated based on the share of time a Roblox premium subscriber spends on your experience or game.

Another way of earning Robux is via advertising. Creators can embed high-quality ad units in their game that will programmatically serve ads and are paid through a revenue share system for the impressions and clicks generated.

Once you have earned at least 30,000 Robux in your account, you are eligible to exchange them for real currency using the Developer Exchange programme.

Advanced Tips and Resources

Though Roblox is all about creativity and gaming enthusiasm, the following tips will make your Roblox game journey easier:

  • Practice the design process by exploring the designing tools, pre-planning and testing to improve a game or “experience”.
  • Have an understanding of the Lua concepts of variables, conditional statements and typing functions
  • Become acquainted with advanced creation tools in the Roblox game, such as making parts or creating terrain.
  • Make a game that has not been made a lot, or add a unique factor to your game.
  • Join a group or clan to get help and tips from experienced players. You can also use the Roblox forums to find answers to your questions.
  • Check out the Roblox blog and watch Roblox game videos on YouTube to stay updated and learn more about developing games.

Conclusion

The popularity of Roblox lies in its ease of use, access, creative freedom for game developers and the opportunity it gives of monetising your game. It is the first-of-its-kind gaming platform creating abundant possibilities. Thus, rightfully Roblox is the market leader in the digital gaming industry. Be the beginner coders or the professional developers, all use Roblox because of its ease of scripting a game.

To get started with scripting on Roblox, you can use the AlphaGen Learning platform to learn the programming language Lua. AlphaGen Learning is an online learning platform providing coding and technology classes for kids aged between 7 and 16. It is a future-driven platform that provides courses in virtual coding, mobile app development, web development, image editing, and more.

So, if you are a gaming enthusiast, we can’t recommend Roblox enough! Create a Roblox account, install Roblox Studio and get started on “powering imagination”.
