But after years of watching families make this decision both ways, we can tell you the full stop is rarely the right call — and the reasons have less to do with coding than with how children actually handle exam years.

The case for pausing (it’s not wrong)
Let’s be fair to the instinct first. The arguments for stopping are real:
- Time is genuinely scarce. Between school, supplementary classes, and tuition, a P6 child’s week fills fast. An hour of coding is an hour not spent on revision.
- Cognitive load matters. Some children do feel stretched thin, and one more scheduled commitment can tip a tired child into resentment.
- Money is finite. Exam-year tuition is expensive. Reallocating the enrichment budget to a maths tutor is a rational family decision.
If your child is visibly overwhelmed, sleeping poorly, or has told you they want a break — listen to that. No article should override what you’re seeing at home.
But for most families, the decision isn’t being driven by a struggling child. It’s being driven by a default assumption: exam year means cut everything non-academic. And that assumption deserves scrutiny.
Why the full stop usually backfires
1. Children need a pressure valve, and screens will fill the vacuum
Here’s what actually happens when a P6 child’s coding class disappears: the hour doesn’t convert cleanly into revision. It converts into decompression — and for most 12-year-olds in 2026, decompression means YouTube, Roblox, or short-form video. The structured, productive screen activity gets replaced by the unstructured kind. Many parents tell us the household screen-time arguments got worse after cutting the coding class, not better.
A scheduled hour of building something is one of the few forms of rest that doesn’t feel like rest to a parent but functions as rest to a child.
2. Coding is closer to PSLE maths than any other enrichment

Cutting piano and keeping coding is a very different decision from cutting coding and keeping piano.

Project momentum — the half-built game, the app they were excited about — dies completely, and dead projects rarely get revived. When students return after a long break, the first month is spent recovering ground, which is demoralising for a child who remembers being better.

4. Secondary school arrives immediately after
The PSLE ends in early October. Posting results come in December. January – May: normal cadence. PSLE is months away. There’s no reason to change anything in the first half of the year; this is also when project-based learning momentum is most valuable.
June – August: halve the frequency. Move from weekly to fortnightly lessons. The class shifts character too — less new-concept learning, more maintaining and enjoying. This is where 1-on-1 formats have a structural advantage over group classes: a fortnightly private lesson simply picks up where the last one ended, while a group class that meets weekly moves on without your child.
September – PSLE (early October): full break, guilt-free. The two to three weeks before the papers should be clear. A planned, defined break is completely different from an open-ended stop — the child knows it’s a comma, not a full stop.
Post-PSLE (mid-October – December): resume, and go deeper. This is the golden window. The PSLE is done, school demands collapse, and your child has two and a half months of genuine free time before secondary school. It’s the single best stretch in their primary school life for a big project — building a full game, finishing a portfolio piece, or attending a holiday coding camp. Families who scaled down rather than stopped hit this window with momentum instead of rust.
Questions to ask your provider before deciding
Whatever you decide, the flexibility of your current provider should shape it. Ask:
- Can we move to fortnightly without losing our slot or rate?
- What happens to missed lessons in a heavy exam week — do make-up classes exist, and how easily?
- Can lessons shift to lighter, project-maintenance mode rather than new syllabus content?
- If we do take a full break, is there a re-onboarding process, or does my child restart cold?
If the answers are rigid — fixed group schedules, forfeited lessons, no pacing control — the problem may be the format rather than the coding. Group classes are built around the group’s calendar; exam year is precisely when your child’s calendar stops cooperating with everyone else’s.
