How Does Generation Alpha Learn?

How Does Generation Alpha Learn?

There’s a new generation label you (probably) didn’t know about! It’s called ‘Generation Alpha’, to describe children born after 2010! Gone are the days of blackboards and chalks, we’ve been living and breathing in the digital era of immersive learning methodologies. Before we dive into them, let’s see how learning has evolved through the generations:

  • Baby Boomers (Born between 1946-1964): They tend to prioritize learning and consider themselves ‘lifelong learners’. They are eager to learn from professors as well as other highly credentialed individuals. They prefer to attend courses in a traditional physical classroom.
  • Generation X (Born between 1965-1980): What puts them off is micromanaging styles from professors or in coursework. These students look for information and practice, rather than theory. They aren’t intimidated by using technology in the classroom.
  • Millennials (Born between 1981-1995): Millennials respond to authority figures who help them, and they rely on familial input for decisions. They tend to have a shorter attention span and look for social media to be incorporated in their learning environment. While it seems like a generation that wants to learn through technology, they do value face-to-face contact a lot.
  • Generation Z (Born between 1995-2010): This generation respects educators who can help them move toward developing a sustainable career, as they came of age during the 2007-2009 economic recession. With an even shorter attention span than millennials, this is the generation that turns to YouTube for answers. In a brick-and-mortar environment, Generation Z students thrive in designated learning spaces.

Now we’re ready to study Generation Alpha, born between 2011-2025, into a digital world. They learn in a tech-orientated way. Just think about the number of toddlers who tap on magazines expecting pictures to move! These young learnings are exposed to innovation, gamification, and interactivity to the extent that there is no differentiation between digital and analogue in their eyes. In fact, here’s a surprising statistic: only 2% of Gen Alpha kids are NOT using any type of technology!

So, let’s take a look at what learning looks like for this generation:

  • Skill-centric approach- Resources and information are available on-demand, so it’s a lot more important to have a guide, a who gives places emphasis on skills instead of content. Generation Alpha will grow up to be the most educated and materially endowed generation.  The modern generation needs to learn how to think, not what to think.

  • Cultivating soft skills– For generation Alpha, majority of the focus needs to be on soft skills like problem-solving, logical abilities, physical interactions, self-regulation and goal setting. Educators will now need to engage students in opportunities that enrich their skillsets and provide a platform to think creatively.
  • Collaboration– With the renewed emphasis on creativity, critical thinking and problem solving, the need for collaborative efforts has risen and is welcomed. Collaboration and teamwork are big for this generation, who loves to create things because they’re growing up in a world filled with content creators, not just passive consumers.
  • Learning to be flexible and purposeful– Generation Alpha is interested in authenticity and thrives on creativity. They want to create products and services of value that allow them to integrate their learnings in an innovative way. Educators now need to consider learning methodologies where students are enabled to demonstrate their knowledge in innovative and creative manners.

  • Highly personalized learning- Accustomed to having immediate access to tons of information, lectures and old models of learning are becoming more and more obsolete with Generation Alpha. They learn at their own pace and prefer their learning journeys to be virtual and personalized.

How does AlphaGen Learning fit the frame and bridge the gap?

We’ve named ourselves AlphaGen because we want to curate the teaching model for this new generation. Here are some of our key USPs-
